Few travel moments rival the thrill of stepping aboard a ship on her maiden voyage — where every horizon is a first. This afternoon, make your way to the Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel at Circular Quay, for your transfer to Circular Quay Overseas Passenger Terminal where the Douglas Mawson awaits. With the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as your backdrop, join your fellow passengers for the beginning of a new chapter in Aurora Expeditions’ story. After settling into your stateroom, attend important safety briefings before sharing in the excitement with your Expedition Team, crew and fellow passengers during a celebratory Welcome Dinner, marking not only the beginning of your voyage to Tasmania, but also the very first night aboard the Douglas Mawson. Then gather on deck as the lines are thrown and the ship eases into open water. The sight of Sydney’s skyline fading into the distance is always stirring, but on this first sailing it is especially poignant – the start of both a personal adventure and an historic journey for our newest expedition ship.
Spend two leisurely days at sea as we head south along Australia’s east coast. Enjoy expert-led lectures, workshops, and informal talks that bring to life Tasmania’s geology, ecosystems, and maritime history. Wildlife spotting opportunities abound – keep watch for albatross gliding effortlessly on the wind, pods of dolphins, or even migrating whales. Between presentations, take time to enjoy the ship’s facilities, relax with new friends in the bar or observation lounge, and soak up the excitement of this shakedown voyage.
There is something truly special about approaching Tasmania’s wild east coast on the Douglas Mawson’s very first voyage. As we sail south, the island unfurls in a dramatic sweep of pristine beaches, sculpted headlands, and a mosaic of habitats ranging from windswept coastal heathlands to dry open forests and towering eucalypt woodlands. For many, this inaugural landing will be remembered not only for its beauty but for its place in Aurora’s expedition history. At its heart lies the Freycinet Peninsula, home to Wineglass Bay – a perfect crescent of white sand framed by the pink granite peaks of the Hazards. Today’s adventures offer many ways to experience this remarkable landscape: hike into fragrant woodlands and coastal tracks alive with native flora, paddle a kayak across iridescent waters, explore by Zodiac, or simply walk a beach littered with orange-lichen boulders. Wildlife thrives here too – keep watch for white-bellied sea eagles wheeling overhead, Bennett’s wallabies grazing in the shade of she-oaks, pods of dolphins cresting the surf, or the shy short-beaked echidna nosing through the undergrowth. Immersed in these diverse ecosystems, you’ll discover why Tasmania’s east coast is treasured as one of the world’s most beautiful natural playgrounds.
